Second wave has claimed 47 lives in 37 days

Gangtok, 12 May: Novel Coronavirus claimed six more lives in Sikkim today. Yesterday, eight deaths were reported from Covid wards at two hospitals. The State has now lost 183 lives to Covid. If ever there was a doubt that the second wave has been more devastating - here are at statistics to underline the situation. Tking the second wave fatalities as having begun on 0 April last month when the State recorded its 136th Covid fatality after having gone two months without such a death, Sikkim has seen 47 fatalities in the 37 days that have passed since. The first Covid fatality in the State was reported on 26 July, 2020. While three patients passed away at STNM Hospital, three succumbed at CRH-Tadong. Meanwhile, the number of active cases of novel coronavirus here increased to 2,866 on Wednesday with 227 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. Of the 227 cases, 190 were recorded in East District, 14 in West District, 19 in South District and 04 in North District. The 227 samples returned positive in the

testing of 730 samples in the State on Tuesday. Of the active cases, eight are currently admitted in the ICU facility of STNM Hospital and nine in ICU facility at CRH, Tadong. On the other hand, the figure of recovered cases also further improved to 7,135 with the release of 93 more persons from home isolation

upon completing of their isolation. Sikkim’s tally of the confirmed cases of COVID-19 has now reached 10,392
