Sikkim begins vaccinating 15-18 year olds at 25 centres

Covid vaccination for the children aged between 15 to 18 years started in Sikkim on Monday with the official launch of the drive here at the AYUSH Building at STNM Hospital premises at Sochaygang. This vaccination is being offered at 25 vaccination centres across the State.

The official launch of the vaccination was attended by Gangtok Deputy Mayor,Tshering Palden Bhutia, as chief guest and was also attended by Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Health Department, D Anandan, and Director General-cum-Secretary, Health, Dr Pempa T Bhutia among other officials and doctors of STNM hospital.

Speaking to media persons, Mr Anandan informed children aged between 15 to 18 years will receive Covaxin jabs, the only vaccine cleared by the Ministry of Health for this age-group.

He added that this age-group is estimated at 42,000 and that the state has sufficient doses to inoculate them.

He added that the department has already distributed vaccines to all districts.

For today, 100 children had registered for the vaccination at the AYUSH Building.

The eligible children are required to first register on the CoWin portal to book an appointment for vaccination at their desired centre.

As for the booster dose [which the Prime Minister refers to as “precautionary dose”], Mr Anandan informed this will begin on 10 January for healthcare and frontline workers and for people aged above 60 and comorbidities.

Of these, those who have completed 39 weeks since their second dose will be eligible for the booster shot.

On the Omicron worries, he said that Sikkim was fully prepared to handle it and added that no case of omicron has been detected in Sikkim thus far.
