Sikkim breaks daily spike record with 264 more cases; 3 more fatalities

Gangtok, 06 May: Sikkim recorded its highest single-day surge in Novel Coronavirus infections with 264 fresh cases being reported in the last 24 hours taking the number of active cases to 2,256 on Thursday. This is the highest single-day spike in caseload since the 259 cases which were recorded on 01 May. It needs to also be added here that many more than usual samples were tested over these 24 hours

with 903 samples being processed when the State rarely went past 800 over the past few weeks.

Also over the same 24 hours, three more Covid-positive people passed away in the State taking the Covid toll in the State to 158. Of the three deaths, one has been recorded at Mangan District Hospital

[reported in this newspaper in yesterday’s edition], one at Namchi District Hospital and one at Central Referral Hospital, Tadong. Meanwhile, out of the 264 new cases, 148 were recorded in East District, 90 in South District, 19 in West District and seven in North Sikkim. These cases were returned from the testing of 903 samples on Wednesday, of which 217 new cases were picked up in RT-PCR testing of 710 samples, one in CBNAAT and 46 more in the rapid antigen testing of 188 samples. Ten patients are currently admitted in the ICU facility of STNM hospital and 04 in the ICU facility of Central Referral Hospital, Tadong. 20 more Covid patients were hospitalised today and there are now 181 Covid patients in hospital. As per data maintained by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of the Health Department, there are 256 dedicated Covid-beds in hospitals across the State at present. Of the active cases, 1,880 Covid-positive people are under home isolation across the State at present. Meanwhile, Sikkim’s tally of confirmed cases of COVID-19 now stands at 9,183. On the other hand, the number

of recovered cases has reached 6,565 with the release of 50 more persons from the home isolation upon completion of their isolation period.
