Sikkim Inter school Junior Olympics to begin 27 March


Gangtok, 25 Mar: The Department of Sports & Youth Affairs is all set to organize the 1st Inter School State Junior Olympics Games & State Level Chief Minister One Mile Run 2021 here from 27 to 31 March. Chief Minister PS Tamang is scheduled to inaugurate the event at Paljor Stadium on 28 March accompanied by the Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs Department, KN Lepcha as guest of honour. Addressing a press conference here today, Secretary, DS&YA, Raju Basnet, informed that the department had initially organized the event at the block and then district levels to promote sports at the grassroots level. He added that shortlisted teams and athletes will now represent their respective districts at the state-level competition in disciplines in U-14 and U-17 boys & girls categories.

“The main objective of this Junior Olympics is to provide exposure and platform to raw talent from rural corners of the State. The event has developed a talent pool culture in the state so now sports associations need to pick up talented athletes from this event and prepare them for regional and national competitions,” he said. The Secretary stressed that concerned sports associations need to work effectively to motivate, support and encourage talented athletes from different corners of the State to take them to the next level. While providing details of the event, Director, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Doma Tshering informed that a contingent of 1,110 people - 200 athletes and 28 escorts and officials from each district and 198 athletes in the state-level CM One Mile Run - are expected to participate in the Inter School Junior Olympics. She informed that 3,444 athletes participated in the block-level events from which 753 athletes went on to the district level competition in South District,

988 in block-level and 391 in district-level in North District, 6556 in block-level and 1313 in district-level in West District and 4738 in block-level and 1320 in district- level in East District. The Director mentioned that the CM One Mile Run, which was launched on 26 December, saw the participation of 15,753 runners [8170 boys and 7583 girls] so far in 33 blocks in the State. She added that 360 shortlisted runners participated in the recently concluded district-level competition of whom the topthree

boys and top three girls in U-14 category have been invited to participate in the state-level event.

“CM One Mile Run was initiated on the directions of the CM and guidance of Sports Minister to promote

Olympic movement at the grassroots level. This initiative has been successful in producing athletes from

the grassroot level,” she adds. Likewise, Joint Director, Doniv Rai informed that athletic events at Khel Gaon, Reshithang, Archery events at Archery Field at Tathangchen and boxing, badminton, football, karate, taekwondo, basketball and badminton at different venues in Paljor Stadium complex. He informed that the CM One Mile Run would be flagged off from Paljor Stadium and will go upto Tamang Gumpa and back to the starting point. Secretary informed that on the direction of the CM to promote the club culture in the State, the department has formed sports clubs at every block. He added that the CM would also hand over the token amount of Rs 15,000 to each club formed in 33 blocks to carry out activities of the club.
