Sikkim runners to compete in 24-hour Stadium Run in Mumbai


Gangtok, 25 Aug: A team of long-distance runners from Sikkim will be competing in the 24-Hour Stadium Run scheduled to be held on 28 and 29 August at Wings Sports Centre, Bandra West, Mumbai.A five-member team, led by Marathon Man Amar Subba, will leave on Thursday for the competition being organized by NEB Sports. 52-year-old Amar Subba is participating in stadium

run in the veterans' category, while his students Pritam Rai, Dhan Kumar Mangar and Jatin Chettri in the 12-hour stadium run. Another long-distance runner from Sikkim, Shiva Hang Limboo, will compete

in the 100 KM trail run for an upcoming international competition at this event. The team is being

supported to the competition by the sports wing of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha. Amar Subba had covered 157 KMs in 24 Hours at the stadium run held in Mumbai in 2018 and finished in third

position. Similarly, Shiva Hang Limboo came second in the 12- Hour run held in Delhi in 2019

covering 119 KMs. Pritam Rai and Dhan Kumar Mangar along with Jatin Chettri of West Bengal

police, are participating in such an event for the first time. Addressing a press conference here this afternoon, Mr Subba thanked the SKM party and the Chief Minister for supporting the team to this

international-level event. He shared that the COVID pandemic had affected sports and sportspersons and the runners were looking forward to participating in a sporting event after a gap of nearly two

years. “It is also a big challenge for us to test our strength and stamina at such a big event after a gap of two years,” he said. The team, he informed, trained on the hilly terrain and trails of West Sikkim

in preparation for the competition. “We have trained to the our best and are all set to give our best and very hopeful of returning with medals,” Mr Subba said. He mentioned that his students, Asha Phurba Tamang and Shanti Thapa have also been training hard for another 24-Hour Stadium Rum to be held in Delhi in December later this year. He also thanked Nagaraj Adiga from NEB Sports for having always supported runners from Sikkim and extending free entry to NEB Sports events. SKM sports wing state president Rinzing Wangyal Chophel, conveyed best wishes to the team and shared that SKM has extended full support to the team because the party was committed to promoting sports and sportspersons. The sports’ wing of the party has been working as a bridge between the state government and sportspersons of the State for their development and betterment and to help them compete at national and international levels. Mr Chophel also mentioned that the sports wing has

already started preparations for the international-level, ‘Sikkim Marathon’, a 42 KM full marathon scheduled to be held in the month of December later this year.
