Sikkim’s Covid recoveries cross 20K-mark

Summit Report

Gangtok, 15 Jul:

Sikkim’s count of recovered cases of COVID-19 crossed the 20,000 mark today and now stands at 20,029 with 92 more formerly Covid-positive people making full recoveries in 24 hours.

Over the same 24 hours, 137 new cases of COVID-19 were detected from the testing of 660 samples on Wednesday giving the State a daily positivity rate of 20.7% today. Sikkim’s tally of confirmed cases of COVID-19 has now reached 22,929.

Unfortunately, Sikkim also recorded one more COVID death in the last 24 hours taking the State’s death toll to 318. This new COVID death was reported from STNM Hospital.

As per the Daily Report of COVID-19 released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of the Health Department this morning, the 137 new cases, 46 were registered in East District, 19 in West District, 72 in South District and 04 in North District.

A total of 81 samples returned positive for COVID-19 in RT-PCR testing of 425 samples and 56 others were found positive in rapid antigen testing of 232 samples.

Even as 137 new cases were detected, only three COVID patients were hospitalized today taking the total number of Covid patients in hospital at present to 96. Some solace can be drawn from the fact that this number of under-100 patients in hospital even though there are 2,322 active cases in the State, suggests that the infections are milder [something achieved by vaccination perhaps].

Worryingly for Sikkim, there are 13 Covid patients currently being attended to in ICU facilities at STNM Hospital and Central Referral Hospital.
