Sports Minister launches road to Tokyo Olympics 2020 in Sikkim.

GANGTOK, 23 June: An Olympic awareness campaign, ‘Road to Tokyo Olympics 2020’ has been launched by Minister to Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Kunga Nima Lepcha here at White Hall premises on Wednesday. The month-long campaign will have quiz, debates, talks and other series of activities from 23 June to 23 July.

Indian contingent is also participating in Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 to be held from 21 July to 08 August and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India in coordination with Sports Authority of India and Sports Department of all States is organizing this month-long Olympic awareness campaign.

In his address, the Minister mentioned that the month-long campaign through series of activities to create wide awareness on Olympic and Olympians of the country and also to take the Olympic movement ahead in the State. He stressed that every individual from Sikkim should support the campaign to boost the morale of the Indian contingent. He also expressed his best wishes to the entire Indian contingent for Tokyo Olympic Games 2020.

Minister mentioned that the government has been working hard to bring out Olympians in various disciplines from Sikkim. He stated that everyone needs to work together to support local athletes to take them to the higher levels.

Secretary to Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Raju Basnet mentioned that a big Indian contingent has been participating this time in around 15 different sports disciplines in Tokyo Olympics. He added that Tokyo Olympics is not only important for India but for Sikkim as well as Tarundeep Rai was also the part of Indian contingent to represent the country in archery. While expressing his best wishes, he expressed that the country was hopeful for a medal from Tarundeep Rai.

He mentioned that the Chief Minister and Sports Minister already felicitated and expressed best wishes to Tarundeep and also provided five lakhs of rupees. On the same, the Secretary stated that the month-long campaign with a series of activities has aimed to take the Olympic movement aggressively in the State and to provide information on Olympic and Olympians.

The launching function was started with the welcome address by Director Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Doma Tshering and concluded with the vote of thanks by Special Secretary to the department, Suchitra Thapa.

The function was also attended by president, Kuber Bhandari and general secretary and former Olympian, Jaslall Pradhan of Sikkim Olympic Association and officials and staffs of SYA Department.
