Strength lifters bag 34 medals in national c’ship

GANGTOK, 13 Jan:

Sikkim Strength Lifting Association [SSLA] team has returned home with 34 medals from the 31st National Strength Lifting & Incline Bench Press Championship held from 30 December to 02 January at Alwar, Rajasthan.

The team bagged 12 gold medals, 12 silver medals and 10 bronze medals for the State. A 43-member contingent of SSLA was led by the chief coach,Pema Dorjee Bhutia as team coach and working president, Allen Targain as team manager.

Addressing a press conference here today, SSLA working president stated that this national championship was also a national trial for the upcoming international championship to be held in April this year in Kazakhstan.

“Our team members gave an outstanding performance in the national championship and we are very hopeful that lifters from Sikkim will secure their place in the Indian contingent for the upcoming international championship,” he expressed.

The chief coach mentioned that the state team has not only clinched 34 medals but two lifters from Sikkim have also set new national records in their respective categories.

He informed that Homnath Shiwakoti set a new national record of 52.5 kg in bicep curl by breaking the existing record of 50 kg and Reshma Bhutia also set new national record of 52.5 kg in inclined bench press by breaking the existing record of 50 kg in their respective categories.

He stated that Sheikh Meeraj, Santosh Gupta, KalpanaChhetri, PempaTamang, HomnathSiwakoti and Leomit Lepcha have also passed the national referee examination.
