SU celebrates Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav with Vande Mataram

Gangtok, 05 Apr: Sikkim University organised a cultural evening, ‘Vande Mataram,’ to mark the end of Dandi March and start of Salt Satyagrah here at Manan Kendra on Monday. The event is part of the ongoing nationwide celebration, Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav, launched by the Government of India to mark the start of the 75-week celebration as the nation approaches its 75th year of Independence. The programme had Education Minister Kunga Nima Lepcha as chief guest accompanied by Deputy General Officer Commanding of 17 Mountain Division, Brigadier Vikram Bhan as guest of honour and Sikkim University Vice Chancellor Prof Avinash Khare among other dignitaries. The main highlight of the event was the presentation of patriotic songs and dances and a skit by students and teachers of the Music Department of SU and other artists. In his address, Education Minister expressed that every citizen needs to take inspiration from the struggle and sacrifices made by leaders and freedom fighters. He added that it was important for the people to ask themselves whether they were contributing enough towards the nation-building process and honoring the sacrifices of the freedom fighters. Mr Lepcha stated that Indian Army has been serving the nation with aplomb thanked the soldiers for their service. While congratulating Sikkim University for organising the programme, the Minister appreciated the cultural presentation given by students and Music Department of the university. Likewise, Brigadier Vikram Bhan stated that no success comes without a struggle so it was important to face challenges

to arrive at durable solutions. He also stressed that discipline was very important in life as it reinforces

determination and resolve. Earlier, in his address, the SU Vice Chancellor mentioned that the main

objective of the celebration was to commemorate and remember freedom fighters and celebrate

the achievements and successes of the country.
