Sunday off for RT-PCR testing gives Sikkim only 9 new cases

Gangtok, 19 Apr: Despite a climbing graph of fresh daily cases as Sikkim joins the nation in getting swept up by the second wave of Covid-19, a Sunday off for both the VRD Labs in Sikkim - at STNM Hospital and CRH-Manipal - provided the artificial relief of new cases registering in single-digits

on Monday. Only nine new cases were reported in the State in the 24 hours ending 8AM Monday. These were picked up from Rapid Antigen Testing of 48 samples on Sunday. No RT-PCR tests were carried on Sunday continuing the weekly day off for the VRD Labs. A day earlier, on Saturday, 326 samples had been screened through RT-PCR, 84 of which had returned positive for Novel Coronavirus. On the day, Sikkim had recorded a total of 105 cases. With the nine cases detected today, the number of active cases of coronavirus in Sikkim has inched up to 404. Today, seven Covid patients were admitted to STNM Hospital and there are now 40 such patients convalescing in hospital here. No one is in the ICU. Meanwhile, the figure of recovered cases further improved to 6,017 with the release of three more persons from home isolation after completing their isolation period. back continue to remain incommunicado and after announcing their names, called on people touch with the concerned authorities. Of the nine new cases, eight were reported from East District and one in West Sikkim. While giving details of new cases, Mr Bhutia informed that two persons from Chalisey in Rhenock, one from Ranipool, one from Dhajey in Ranka, one from near SNT colony [Tadong] and one from Lumsey 5th Mile [Tadong] in East District were found positive for COVID-19. He added that a resident of SGMI quarters at Baluwakhani has also tested positive. On the same, he informed that one of two central government officials who had arrived at SGMI for training has tested positive. A tourist from Kolkata also tested positive for COVID-19 during rapid antigen testing at Rangpo gate and returned in the same vehicle after receiving the report. The one case from West Sikkim is from Tikjek, it is informed. While providing details of vaccinations carried out on Sunday, he informed that a total of 902 persons were vaccinated for COVID-19 on Sunday of whom 696 received their first dose while 206 completed their vaccine schedule with the second dose
