Sunday slowdown in testing brings Sikkim’s active Covid load under-500 for first time in two months

Summit Report

Gangtok, 08 Aug:

At 476, Sikkim’s active Covid load as of Monday is the lowest it has been in nearly two months. The number of active cases of Covid had gone past 500 on 17 July, and dropped under that number for the first time since then today.

The slowdown in testing for Covid on Sundays when the VRD Labs screen much fewer samples, might have hastened the numbers coming down under-500, but the graph has been thankfully sloping downwards and that moment would have anyways arrived in a few days.

Only 17 more Covid infections were recorded here in the past 24 hours even as 108 more Covid patients made full recoveries and were discharged from home isolation over the same period. Infections have been down for the past week or so, but fewer tests also helped keep the number of new cases low. Today’s 17 cases were picked up from the screening of 166 samples to give Sikkim a daily test positivity rate of 10.24%.

Only 80 RT-PCR tests, which can be conducted only in VRD Labs, were carried out yesterday, and these returned 7 positive cases, while the 85 samples put through Rapid Antigen Testing gave ten new cases.

Reassuringly, no new Covid deathswere reported in the past 24 hours and the State has now gone three days without any Covid deaths and the toll continues to hold at 474.

As per the Daily Report of Covid-19 in Sikkim released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of Health Department, out of the 17 cases, three were registered in Gangtok district, two in Pakyong, two in Gyalshing, two in Soreng, six in Namchi and two in Mangan district.

The tally of confirmed cases of Covid-19 recorded in Sikkim in the past two years has now reached 42,784.

Of the 476 active cases, 39 are currently admitted in hospital, seven of whom are currently in ICU and seven admitted in HDU wards.
