Third Wave ebbs in Sikkim, test positivity rate under 5% for three days now

SARS CoV-2 has proven to be a stubborn challenge to surmount, but as far as the third wave in Sikkim is concerned, the numbers suggest that it has receded. The daily test positivity rate came in at 3.2% today and has now remained under 5% for three consecutive days. This is a substantial drop, given that barely a month back, on 20 Jan, Sikkim had recorded a daily TPR of 29.7%. On that day, Sikkim had recorded 305 cases in a day. The number of new cases recorded today is 11.

As per the Daily Report of Covid-19 in Sikkim released Thursday morning by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of the Health Department, these 11 cases were picked up from the screening of 346 samples in the past 24 hours - 127 via RT-PCR to return 5 positive cases, and 218 Rapid Antigen Tests giving six positive cases.

With 46 Covid patients making full recoveries over the same period and getting discharged from home isolation, Sikkim's current recovery rate has grown to 98.3%.

Of the 38,998 cases recorded in Sikkim since testing began on 28 Feb, 2020, a total of 37,601 people have since beaten the virus. Over the past two years, Sikkim has also lost 440 lives to Covid. In the Third Wave, taken by this newspaper to have begun on 08 Jan, 2022, the State has seen 31 Covid-positive people pass away. There have been no Covid deaths in the State for the past two days.

Of the 11 new cases, seven were registered in East District, two in West District and two in South District.

As per the IDSP report, of the 214 active cases of Covid in the State, 11 are reported to be down with severe symptoms, 7 have moderate symptoms while 196 are either asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms.

37 of the Covid patients are admitted in hospitals here, 11 of whom are in ICU. While there is one patient on ventilator, seven others are receiving Oxygen support.

On the vaccination front, 196 adults received Covishield jabs yesterday, 170 of whom completed their vaccination schedule with the second shot and 26 receiving their first jabs.

Among those aged between 15 to 18, 1,497 completed their vaccination schedule with their second shot of Covaxin while 163 others received their first shot.

While 94.79% of the adult population has received both shots of Covishield, 36.95% of those aged between 15 to 18 have received both shots of Covaxin. 81.27% of the latter group has received at least the first dose of the vaccine.
