Training on IT Application in Travel and Tourism Launched.

GANGTOK, 11 Aug: A training programme, ‘IT Application in Travel and Tourism’ for stakeholders in travel and tourism sectors in Sikkim has been launched here on Thursday. The training programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Electronics and IT [MeitY], Government of India for ‘Information Communications Technologies [ICT] Intervention in Travel and Tourism through capacity building in New Age Digital Technologies’. The training programme is being organized by National Institute of Electronics & IT [NIELIT], Gangtok in collaboration with Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation and sponsored by MeitY, Government of India.

It is informed that a total of 360 stakeholders of the Travel and Tourism Industry of Sikkim would be trained by NIELIT Gangtok under this training programme on ‘ICT Applications in Travel and Tourism’ over a period of three years. The launching of the training programme has the Chairman Department of Information Technology, Navraj Gurung as the chief guest and Chairman Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation [STDC] Lukendra Rasaily was present as the guest of honour.

In his address, the chief guest Mr Gurung expressed that such a training programme was the need of the hour for the stakeholders in travel and tourism sectors. He expressed that the training programme would be very beneficial mainly for tourism and travel stakeholders in other districts and rural pockets in the State. He said that the training would also help Sikkim to make a strong digital presence in the tourism sector to attract more tourists.

Mr Gurung suggested organisations of travel and tourism stakeholders to help in getting stakeholders from different rural pockets for this training progrmame. He added that IT intervention would be helpful to promote home stays of rural parts in the State digitally. While thanking NIELIT for organizing the training programme in Sikkim, he urged participants to make full use of knowledge of the training programme to do their business more effectively.

Likewise, STDC Chairman mentioned that some big online travel companies of the country have been controlling the tourism business of Sikkim. “We cannot give our marketing rights to them, so it is important to make the best use of the latest technologies and digital tools to keep our business and marketing in our own hands,” he said. He expressed that such training by professionals on the latest technology would definitely help local stakeholders to keep control on their business and marketing.

Mr Rasaily mentioned that there were around 1400 travel operators, 1500 hoteliers and 900 homestays so such training would help them to do business more effectively. While mentioning that the state government stressed upon the quality tourism, he expressed that such training would also help the efforts of the state government to move towards quality tourism.

Secretary Department of IT, Yogendra Sharma expressed best wishes to all participants and further urged them to make the full use and advantage of available technologies to do better in their business.

Earlier, NIELIT Gangtok Director-in-charge Angom Buboo Singh mentioned that the training would help to bring out torch bearers of the new age digital era. He also thanked the IT Department and STDC for extending all necessary support to the organization in its initiatives in the State. He informed that stakeholders of Tourism and travel sectors would participate in this training programme.

Scientist/Joint Director, NIELIT Gangtok, Khagendra Sharma, who is also the Chief Investigator for the said project, gave an overview of the training programme. He gave a detailed presentation on how technologies like Virtual Reality can be applied in Travel and Toursim and how the current training would equip the participants with the Digital skills. He informed that stakeholders belonging to various sectors of Travel and Tourism industry of Sikkim who will be trained on Basics of IT including Digital Marketing and use of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Social Networking and others in Travel and Tourism industry by NIELIT Gangtok at its premises located here at Sichey. He mentioned that a total of 18 batches having 20 participants in each batch will undergo a 10-day long training programme. It is added that this programme will train 120 candidates every year and finally will cover a total of 360 candidates over three years under this training programme.

The function ended with the presentation of vote of thanks by senior resource person of NIELIT Gangtok Pawan Kumar Sharma. The launching function was attended by officials and staff of STDC and Department of IT along with tourism and travel stakeholders.
