Week ends with slight blip in active cases and positivity in Sikkim

Covid continued its erratic and unpredictable run in Sikkim and the State ended the week with the seven days [17-24 Oct] giving it 151 new cases from 3,110 tests, four more deaths and 14,357 more people here getting fully vaccinated.

Where the week had begun with a daily test positivity rate of 1.8%, it ended with the daily TPR coming in at 6.4% today. The test positivity rate for the week averaged at 4.85% and there has been a slight spike in the number of active cases as well. While there were 174 active cases of Covid-19 in Sikkim on 17 October, the number stood at 200 today.

The recovery rate has also slipped slightly to 98.10% today against the 98.20% Sikkim had recorded last Sunday, 17 October.

Vaccination meanwhile continues on a steady clip with more than 4.36 lakh people in the State now fully vaccinated against Covid. Starting the week at 81.63% of the adult population fully vaccinated, the State improved the percentage to 85.40% in the past seven days.

On Saturday, Sikkim administered 4,282 more doses of Covishield, of whom 182 people received the first jab while 4,100 completed their vaccination schedule with the second dose. The State has administered a total of 9,58,240 doses of the vaccine thus far; 5,22,308 people having received at least the first dose of whom 4,36,389 have received their second dose as well.

On a reassuring note, no new Covid deaths were reported in the past 24 hours and the toll continues to hold at 394.

As per the Daily Report of COVID-19 in Sikkim released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of the Health Department, the state’s tally of confirmed cases of COVID-19 now stands at 31,900 with 32 new cases detected in the past 24 hours.

These 32 cases were picked up from the testing of 496 samples yesterday, giving Sikkim a daily test positivity rate of 6.4%.

While 17 people tested positive in RT-PCR testing of 303 samples, 15 more cases were detected in rapid antigen testing of 189 samples.

23 of the new cases were registered in East District, 02 in West District and 07 in South District.

The count of recovered cases improved to 30,987 with 27 people making full recoveries in the past 24 hours and getting discharged from home and facility isolation.

There are now 200 active cases of Covid in the State of whom 36 have symptoms severe enough to require hospitalization while the remaining 164 are on their way to recovery under home and facility isolation.

Five of the Covid patients in hospital are admitted in ICU facilities at STNM Hospital and Central Referral Hospital. There were no new hospitalizations in the past 24 hours.

Of the 36 in hospital, four are under 18 years of age, one of whom is in the ICU.
