The 9th Jorethang Badminton Open Championship 2025 commenced with great enthusiasm on 23 January, drawing a record-breaking total of 389 participants. Players from across Sikkim, and also from Nepal, Assam, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, and Siliguri have registered to compete in this prestigious event, making it a historic occasion for Sikkim, which has never witnessed such an overwhelming turnout for a badminton tournament, a press release informs.
The tournament, set to continue till 26 January, features 221 junior players competing in categories ranging from Boys & Girls Under-11 to Under-19. Adding to the excitement, veteran players have also been invited to participate in the Men’s Doubles category for the 35+ to 50+ age group.
With a total cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh, the winners and runners-up will take away cash awards and trophies. The trophies have been sponsored by area MLA Madan Cintury, while IPCA Jorethang and NTPC Rambang have co-sponsored the event. The championship would not have been possible without a generous grant from Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and the organizers have extended heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors for their unwavering support, the release adds.
The second day of the tournament had Deputy Speaker Rajkumari Thapa attending the event.
The semi-finals and finals, scheduled for 25 and 26 January, are expected to deliver thrilling matches for badminton enthusiasts.
