SUMMIT REPORT, Gangtok 08 Jan: Sikkimey Nagarik Samaj has “unequivocally condemned” what it sees as the “irresponsible and baseless statement” made by the Gorkha Rashtriya Congress seeking Sikkim-Darjeeling merger, a demand which GRC has raised for the 23 years that it has been existence.
“Such remarks not only distort historical facts but also pose a direct threat to the constitutional sanctity and territorial integrity of the state of Sikkim under Article 371F of the Indian Constitution,” SNS states.
GRC had reiterated the demand during its foundation day celebrations in Darjeeling yesterday, even suggesting secession from India since the merger demand was not gaining any traction or support in the country.
“The Sikkimey Nagarik Samaj firmly believes that the Gorkha Rastriya Congress’ statement is divisive, inflammatory, and rooted in a complete misunderstanding of the historical and legal realities of Sikkim. Darjeeling and Sikkim, despite cultural affinities, are distinct political entities with different historical trajectories. Such ill-informed propositions are not only futile but also detrimental to the peace and harmony of the region,” SNS stresses in a press statement issued by its general secretary, Samso Subba, today.
